Silverwind Ranch
is owned by Nick and Marcia Bell and has been in the Bell family since the
1930's. The Wagyu Cattle ranch produces full blood Wagyu breeding stock,
purebred Wagyu breeding stock, Prime Wagyu Beef (Kobe Style),
and Wagyu feeder calves using natural methods. Our genetics are produced from
the worlds top marbling Wagyu full blood lines.
The ranch currently stocks over 600
head and is scheduled for
yearly expansion into the foreseeable future. The
ranch operates under a state approved Conservation Plan and all livestock manure
is either recycled under a state approved Comprehensive Nutrient Management plan
or composted. Our cattle range free throughout the year in pastures and no
antibiotics, growth hormone implants, or feed additives containing any animal
byproducts are used. Our cattle drink the same pure constantly flowing artesian
water that we drink, water from the same source that Nestle uses to bottle their
“Ice Mountain” brand water. Our feed is grown on our own ranch under our close
tutelage and irrigated with artesian water.
Our Wagyu calves are born in the
early spring and during the summer months our cows graze, with their calves at
their side, on mixed pasture grasses of alfalfa, white clover, tekapo, tall
fescue, and festolium. These rich pasture grasses provide the source for the
quantities of natural mothers milk necessary to produce strong, naturally
healthy, growing calves. Our calves remain with their mothers for approx seven
months until “low stress” weaning.
During late fall weaning, calves are
gradually introduced to ranch
grown feed by eating from feed bunks along with
their mothers while at the same time still drinking the slowly decreasing supply
of rich mothers milk. At weaning, the cows are simply moved to “the other side
of the fence” so calves remain in low stress contact with their mothers as they
move to eating only the rich hays and grains grown on the ranch along with
natural vitamins and minerals. As they grow in stature and gradually gain their
independence, their diet of carefully balanced home grown feeds of hay, corn.
and grains are steadily increased.
